Useful information about securing loads with lashing straps

Spanngurte und Zurrgurte für die Ladungssicherung
§§ 22 German road traffic regulations: The responsibility for securing loads lies only with the driver, but the loader and the vehicle’s owner may also be held responsible.

A driver is obliged to refuse to drive if the load is not adequately secured!

Find out here about lashing straps, lifting straps, cover protectors and many other important aids for securing your load:

Seven golden rules for securing loads:
  1. Choose a suitable vehicle
  2. Do not exceed the total permitted weight and permitted axle loads and  do not carry loads below the minimum axle load
  3. Position the load’s centre of gravity on the longitudinal plane where possible and position it as low as possible
  4. Secure the load against slipping, rolling or falling
  5. Use suitable loading materials
  6. Do not damage the load
  7. Modify your speed to the nature of the load and the road and traffic conditions

Attaching the lashing straps:
  • Secure in all directions
  • The load must always be secured, even if you are only driving slowly
  • Select suitable lashing straps
  • Check the straps for damage
  • Lashing straps must not be knotted, squashed or stretched over sharp edges Lashing straps must bear weight with their entire width

Checking of lashing straps:
  • Lashing straps must be checked before every use for any flaws and taken out of service if necessary
  • A check of the ‘discard criteria’ must be carried out at least once a year. The lashing strap may then need to be disposed of
  • Lashing straps must be stored in a clean, dry and well ventilated place away from the effect of weather and aggressive substances
  • Lashing straps must not be dried in the proximity of fire or other hot surfaces (> 100°C)
  • Maintenance of the lashing straps must only be carried out by trained people

Lifting straps and round slings

Lifting straps and round slings compliant with DIN EN 1495-1 or DIN EN 1495-2 are marked with a strength label on which are printed the carrying capacity for certain types of fastening, the manufacturer, the material and the date of manufacture:

Polyester (PES) = blue label
Polyamide (PA) = green label
Polypropylene (PP) = brown label

For lifting straps and round slings, there is a uniform colour code for the same carrying capacity:

Same carrying capacity = same strap colour
